Volunteering at the Shrine

More than 250,000 people visit the Shrine each year including thousands of school students wanting to learn more about the contribution and efforts of our forebears.

Volunteer Guides are essential to the success of the Shrine and are part of Melbourne’s public face.  The guides help the Shrine in its role to promote remembrance and maintain the ANZAC spirit.

Who can become a Volunteer Guide?

Anyone aged 18 years or over who has an interest in and wants to learn more about the Shrine and/or Australia’s involvement in conflicts and peacekeeping missions can apply to be a Volunteer.

Volunteering at the Shrine is not limited to people with a service background.

Please note that a Police Records Check and a Working With Children Check will be required.

What does being a volunteer guide involve?

There are three aspects to volunteering at the Shrine.

Volunteer Guides:

Being a Volunteer Guide requires a four hour commitment on a regular basis to help show visitors around the memorial and explain its background and features.

The guides are organised on a roster system which operates 7 days per week from 10am – 4.00pm.

Education Volunteers:

The Shrine of Remembrance Education Centre opened in November 2005. Volunteers with an education or teaching background can volunteer to assist with the delivery of Shrine Education Program. Education volunteers undergo additional training to volunteer guides.

Other Volunteers:

With the advent of new exhibitions, rostering of volunteers, research etc, there is ample opportunity for people with varying skills to become involved at the Shrine.

Time requirements for this aspect of volunteering are flexible and can usually be arranged to suit.

Training

An introductory information session is held regularly for new applicants. This session involves a briefing on the features of the Shrine, its purpose, the roles of volunteers, etc.

If you want to become a guide you are paired up with an existing guide who will provide you with hands-on training and experience prior to being appointed.

If you are volunteering for other purposes this is arranged on a case by case basis.
